BibleMapper Key
The most frequent question I get pertains to the BibleMapper Key. You need this key to access some advanced features of the program as well as the ability to save edits. As noted on the BibleMapper downloads page, you need to send an email to: bibmapsupport at biblemapper.com (You know the routine; change the at to @, no spaces)
David Barrett handles the key requests manually, so you will not get an immediate response. He gets to sending out keys when he can, and it may take up to a week or more. If a better system develops, I will post an update here. (mgvh)
Problems Printing Maps
I am a new Biblemapper user. I am trying to print out simple maps of the Sea of Galilee region and I am not getting good results. I am printing over a network to an HP Laserjet 3390 (B&W). The printer and network are both operating correctly. When I print a map, I get a readable map, but the fill / shading is fractured and spread around the map randomly. When I try to print to a color Laserjet HP CP 3505n, the blue clor of the Sea is inside the right area but the yellow color of the surrounding land appears as a 1" by 1" square in the upper left corner of the print out. The rest of the larnd area is white. The color printer is also operating properly.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Biblemapper is a great tool and I hope to use it for teahing purposes, but I can't without solving this printing problem.
I have read the guidance for printing in the program Help area already. Thanks!

Request 1: Changing Location of River Label
I am trying to change the position of the name of a river. Is it possible to do this? The only way I can figure out a way to do so is to make a completely new label and then hide the original label. (But this hides all the other river labels...)
Responses:
I now see how David's suggestion works. When you duplicate/hide, the original is hidden, and one can reset the new label wherever and however one chooses. The original is not 'lost.' It simply is hidden, and it can be unhidden using Show/Hide (CTRL-R).
Request 2: Displaying 12 Tribes
I am unable to view or print maps with the boundaries for the 12 tribes. I have selected from DISPLAY the period of the Judges and have tried using the SHOW/HIDE tool to include these boundaries. What am I doing wrong? Or can you give me the steps I need to use?
My Email is res9 at charter dot net
Thanks
Responses:
- Start with the
blankmap.mat (save this to your templates subdirectory under Program Files/BarrettWare/Bible Mapper 3/Templates)
- Using the Display menu, on the Include tab, choose Political Boundaries (and also choose "Custom Objects" to display any customizations. Cf. #7 below.)
- Using the Display menu, on the Period tab, choose Exodus and Judges
- Using the Display menu, on the Other tab, choose Fill Boundaries and Full (Partial fill also works, but in this instance doesn't look so good)
- On the Show/Hide Objects menu, click to move all the Boundaries so that they show
- Center and zoom (about 35%) to Israel, and you should see something like this:
12Tribes.map
- You will note on the map I give, that I edited the "Benjamin" label a bit so that it is more legible at the 35% zoom. To do this, I used CTRL-F to find Benjamin (boundary), right clicked, edit/modify selected object, Yes to create custom based on std map object. Used CTRL-F again to find Benjamin (custom), right clicked, edit selected, unclick "use defined style," click to make label visible, and played around with it from there to get the label position and font as I desired. Uncheck "show line/border" and "fill area."
Request 3: Requesting a key
How long does it normally take to receive a key and get started using the more advanced functions of Biblemapper? "

Select the river and edit it, which makes a custom object copy of it and hides the original standard river object. The custom object (including its label) can then be customized however you want.

I had difficulty following David's helpful advice, on my PC clicking the Select Tool (or using | Tools | Select Object (or CTRL-H) all just gave me the hiourglass and a message from Windows that BibleMapper was "Not Responding". However, elsewhere Mark kindly suggested CTRL-F and then choose the object to edit from the popup menu. I was going to make a nice screencast showing my success, but I can only get the new label to stick out W-E ("horizontally") though I can now place it where i wish...

Can anyone give me the step-by-step key/mouse/clicks to make an object of a custom route between Ekron and Beth-shemesh? I've read the instructions, but I'm missing something. (It may be my own good sense!)

I have tried to download Bible Mapper 3 times. From your Home Page, I clicked Download, followed your directions by emailing you at bibmapsupport@biblemapper.com, received the email, followed directions for verification using the last 32 characters of the link, and each time got a message that either the verification number is incorrect or I am already verified. I then went back to your Download page and clicked on .msi file and followed directions, loading it onto my computer. But when I open it, I don't have functionality (even to create a map using New Bible Map). I am able to move around on the map, change the view percentage, eliminate and/or add things on the default map...but can't create my own new map. Also, all the city titles are piled up on top of each other and just make a black mass the smaller the image is. Finally, when I go to Help, then Registration, it tells me I am not registered. Between Attempt 1 & 2, then again between Attempt 2 & 3, I removed Bible Mapper from my computer list of programs so I could start again fresh. With my Attempt 3, I even switched to my husband's email address thinking perhaps your database was reading mine twice (since I tried twice) and not allowing it to validate a duplicate. Still no luck.
Please help. This looks like a wonderful opportunity for me to build meaningful references for the Old Testament survey class I am creating for an adult Sunday School course.

I too have a question about how long it takes to get a key to start being able to save a map. I've already created a few and have learned the nuances (and quirks) of this wonderful software but without the key everything has to vanish after I'm done. I submitted my request over five days ago.

While you wait for a key, and give thanks for David who made this superb tool and made it freely available, you can save maps by doing a "print screen" (often by pressing the Function Key and the PrtSc key and then pasting the screen dump into an image editing program or direct into PPT...

Andrew - The program will NOT run natively on a Mac. But it does run excellently on a Mac running Parallels. I'm sure the same is true with VM Fusion. I've tried running it using CrossOver, and X86 emulator, but it locked up everytime. I'm on a MacBook Pro and am using Windows XP. So far, it's been great!

Although I've not tried running the program on Parallels yet, I agree with Francis that running WinXP on the Mac using Parallels is a great solution. We use our Macbook for Voice of the Martyrs presentations and have Parallels with WinXP running on it. It resolves the problem of having to have two separate computers -- one running OSX and one running WinXP.

I am new at Biblemapper, and it looks like a program that would be useful in preparing Sunday School lessons. I received the key and can work with the maps, but they do not print properly. There's a little color rectangle in the upper left-hand corner, and the test is sketchy etc..
Does anyone know how this can be fixed?
Thanks.

Help, each time I try to register BM3 I get this error message-C\...\BibleMapper\ registrartion.txt was not found. The registration then fails to complete.
Has anyone had this problem or know how to solve this problem. For you info, I downloaded the program to my computer and then ran the exe file from my computer.
Thanks for you help. Fred

PRINTING PROBLEM: For those of you with this problem...
a) Which version of BibleMapper are you using?
b) Could you please share a copy of your map on this site. (Share here: http://biblemapper.pbworks.com/Bible-Mapper-Maps) Others could then try to print and see if the problem is a general one or if there are specific issues.
Thanks.

A) I am using BibleMapper4
B) I can confirm that trying to print the Amos map (Shauger's) crashes the program.
C) I can print other maps in high quality with no issues.
D) There must be something about that Amos map, but I can't figure out why it causes a problem...
Bruce Shauger said

1) There evidently are two issues here. I think my file must be corrupted. I tried it on another computer and it crashed.
2) I also tried printing the default map on three different computers with two different printers and the color does not print. Maybe this is a Biblemapper 3 problem?

Ok, learned something with BM3. Once it crashes trying to print, it will crash there on after until you reboot. I rebooted and tried printing out my new Amos map. It prints but of course it doesn't print all the relief color for some reason.

I'm getting ready to make maps for a book-length project, which prompts these questions:
(1) How do I do something like a "template" setup so that all my maps have the same look and feel for fonts, sizing, and terrain shading?
(2) What's the best size to export them so that when I size them for the placement on the page, the fonts stay regular. For example, I'll often be making maps that are about 3" across, sometimes more like about 5" across. How do I avoid my fonts in the 3" version being smaller by 3/5 than they are in the 5" version?
(3) How do I avoid increasing the density of the fills by the proportion that I shrink to fit my sizing? This wouldn't be a factor in vector art, but it seems like in raster art, sizing down will darken background, and sizing up would lighten it. And perhaps I might even run into a problem with moire patterns for the same reason.

Installation of BM4
I have downloaded Bible Mapper 4 (76MB) and paid for the additional Bible Mapper key. I have tried to install the program but consistently received the following error message.
"The installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package". I am working on a PC with Windows XP Professional and all the Service Packs are installed. Please would you assist in getting me started.

There are several comments here about not being able to get Windows to recognize bibmapsupport at biblemapper.com to work. Just wanted to put up her that Bible Mapper 3 needs an email to bibmapsupport3 at biblemapper.com and Bible Mapper 4 needs an email to bibmapsupport4 at biblemapper.com. Things have probably changed since the comments were made.

I am learning to use BM4 and I have purchased the key. I can't seem to figure out how to get the political boundaries to look like the ones in the examples in the gallery (different soft transparent colors). I also noticed an example map in the gallery that showed the modern day political boundaries. I would like to know how to make the modern day political boundaries; on the display panel the time periods only go up to the Roman time period. I would greatly appreciate someone's help with this! Also, are there any more tutorials than the ones on this site?

I've tried BM3 and BM4, both run laboriously slow on my dual-core XP machine. I have no problem running 15 other apps simultaneously, but even with a clean boot and one app running, it takes ~10 seconds just to select text, another 10 seconds to move the map around, etc. If I turn off TerrainShading, it moves noticeably little faster, but still waaaaaay too slow to be useable.
What am I doing wrong?

I'm new to biblemapper and trying version 3 before I make a decision to purchase version 4. I've watched all of the tutorial videos but I can not figure out how to save the map that I've created into a format that I can then use to insert into a word doc for a Bible Study hand out. Is there someway to save the file into jpg or something other than the biblemapper format that a graphics program can recognize?

Request 4: I am new here after a hiatus of several years. I have just purchased Bible Mapper 5. When I am drawing a line between two cities, I have found that I cannot change its color from default red. I have watched the Tutorial. When I call up the color change pop-up there is no OK button like there is in the Tutorial. Am I missing something obvious?

I am using Bible Mapper 5. Pioneers blaze trails, which become roads as people follow and move into areas. Modern roads seem to follow these trails, yet when I compare modern roads in Israel today, they do not seem to align well with “ancient roads.” Can we import modern roads into the software in such a way that we can also hide segments, for example there may be evidence that a highway failed to follow ancient roads. Perhaps it is not important, but I feel that the better the information that we have, the better conclusions that we can make. Thanks for the help and consideration.
